Welcome
Philosophy and Rationale:
Shattuck-St. Mary’s is committed to helping its students unlock the talents and skills necessary to thrive in tomorrow’s workplace. Our weCreate Center is a space dedicated to student-driven creativity and innovation with a focus on collaboration and 21st century problem solving. The weCreate Studios will include video, animation, writing, graphic design, phone application and web design, fashion design, architecture, music recording, and photography. Housing all of these studios in one location is essential for interdisciplinary collaboration and will not only stimulate innovation but will also allow seemingly unlikely partnerships to form, which, in turn, will stimulate more innovation.
Students will use these studios to develop products, which could include innovations in robotics, books of poetry, 3-dimensional building designs, documentaries, podcasts, web applications, demo albums, and more. All of our students who work in the weCreate Center will have the opportunity to upload their projects to an e-portfolio for presentation on college applications. Students can then share not just the finished projects or grades they have earned but provide color by documenting the entire process.
The weSolve Studio is a Design Thinking lab for collaborative, empathetic problem solving based on the design principles developed at Stanford’s d.school. It is in this studio that students will begin focusing their attention on real world problem solving, and, to that end, we have developed a course called Intro to Design Thinking. Our goal is for our students to master the six steps of the Design Thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, and Reflect by completing challenges of increasing scope.
Student Leadership:
There are 14 seniors and post-graduates who are completing their Senior Leadership Requirement by working in the weCreate Center. Many of them are helping to manage specific studios, while others are working more generally to facilitate studio-based challenges and generate student interest in creative ventures and product development. All of the seniors work collectively to brainstorm ways to market to and engage our student body and faculty. Additionally, we have students participating in our Blended Pilot Program who are pioneering individual weCreate projects and our Day Student Proctors who will staff the Center in the evenings.
